Perfect Travel Kettle Porridge

The most obvious kettle recipe, but worth including because it's the foundation of so many mornings. You can make this creamy and comforting with just oats, boiling water, and a pinch of salt. Add whatever toppings you have in your room stash.

Ingredients (Serves 1):

  • 50g rolled oats
  • 200ml boiling water from the kettle
  • A pinch of salt
  • Toppings: a splash of milk (UHT or oat milk cartons keep fine at room temperature), a spoonful of nut butter, a handful of raisins, a sprinkle of cinnamon, banana.

Method:

  1. Put the oats and salt in a bowl or a large mug.
  2. Pour over the boiling water, stir well, and cover with a plate or a lid. Let it sit for 5–7 minutes.
  3. Stir again, add your toppings, and eat immediately.

Why it's gut-friendly: Oats are packed with beta-glucan, a prebiotic fibre that feeds good gut bacteria. Cinnamon helps stabilise blood sugar, and a spoonful of nut butter adds healthy fats and protein to keep you full.
