Plain Rice with a Fried Egg & Soy Sauce

Plain Rice with a Fried Egg & Soy Sauce

This is my ultimate "safe" meal. Plain white rice, a fried egg with a completely set yolk, and a drizzle of soy sauce. That's it. Every component is predictable. The textures are distinct but simple. It's warm, savoury, and has been my fallback dinner more times than I can count.

Ingredients (Serves 1):

  • 100g jasmine or basmati rice
  • 1 egg
  • A drizzle of vegetable oil
  • 1–2 tsp soy sauce or tamari

Method:

  1. Cook the rice according to packet instructions. Fluff with a fork.
  2. Heat the oil in a small non-stick pan. Fry the egg until the white is set and the yolk is completely firm (no runny texture).
  3. Place the egg on top of the rice. Drizzle with soy sauce.
  4. Eat by cutting pieces of egg with rice. The textures stay separate.

Sensory profile: Soft rice, firm egg. No mixed textures unless you combine them yourself. Mild, salty, predictable.

Why it's gut-friendly: Rice is one of the most easily digestible foods. Eggs provide high-quality protein. Tamari (if using) is fermented, offering a gentle probiotic boost.
