Gut-Friendly Comfort Drinks: 3 Warm Drinks for Wobbly Days

Gut-Friendly Comfort Drinks: 3 Warm Drinks for Wobbly Days

When you need something warm to hold. No caffeine. No weird ingredients. Just comfort in a mug.

Sometimes you don't need food. You just need something warm to hold. Something to sip while you stare at the wall and wait for your nervous system to settle. Something that doesn't require decisions or effort or standing in the kitchen while Mr. A conducts his midnight cooking opera.

These are my three go-to comfort drinks. They're caffeine-free, gut-friendly, and can be made in your room with a travel kettle. (Or in a normal kitchen, if you have access to one. Lucky you.) They're not fancy. They're not going to cure anything. But they're warm, and soothing, and sometimes that's enough.

1. Peppermint Tea (The Classic)

What you need: Peppermint tea bag. Hot water. Mug.

What you do: Put tea bag in mug. Pour hot water over it. Wait 3–5 minutes. Remove tea bag. Sip slowly.

Why it helps: Peppermint is gentle on the stomach, soothing for digestion, and naturally caffeine-free. It's the tea I reach for at 3am when I wake up panicking and need something warm but don't want to make anything worse. It's reliable. It's safe. It's always there.

2. Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte) — The Fancy One

What you need: 1 mug of milk (or oat milk). ¼ tsp ground turmeric. Pinch of black pepper (essential—it helps absorb the turmeric). ¼ tsp ground ginger or cinnamon (optional). 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional).

What you do: Warm the milk in a pan or microwave. (If using a travel kettle, heat water and sit the mug of milk in a bowl of hot water to warm it gently.) Whisk in the turmeric, pepper, and any other spices. Sweeten if you like. Sip slowly.

Why it helps: Turmeric is anti-inflammatory. Ginger soothes digestion. Black pepper helps your body absorb the turmeric. Warm milk is comforting and contains tryptophan, which can help with sleep. This drink feels like a hug. A slightly spicy, golden hug.

If you can't face the whisking: Just make peppermint tea. This recipe will wait.

3. Hot Water with Lemon and Honey (The "I Have Nothing Else" Drink)

What you need: Hot water. A squeeze of lemon (bottled is fine). A spoonful of honey.

What you do: Put honey and lemon in a mug. Pour hot water over. Stir. Sip.

Why it helps: This is the drink for when the cupboard is bare and you can't face anything complicated. It's warm. It's slightly sweet. It's hydrating. And it requires almost nothing from you. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.

A Note on Making Tea in an HMO

I keep a travel kettle in my room because the kitchen is off-limits at night. I also keep a small stash of teabags, honey, and a mug. If you're in a similar situation, I see you. The travel kettle is a lifeline. It's worth the £15. It's worth the slightly-too-small capacity. It means you can have a warm drink without navigating housemates or performing "fine" in the kitchen. Accommodate yourself. The world won't do it for you.

Anxiously Ever After is written by me, Jennie, a 50-something-year-old woman who keeps a travel kettle in my room and a lot of teabags in my drawer. I'm currently drinking cold peppermint tea. I'll reheat it. Probably.
