Soothing Apple & Cinnamon Porridge

Soothing Apple & Cinnamon Porridge

Sometimes you need breakfast to feel like a hug. This is that breakfast. Soft, warm, gently spiced—it's the edible equivalent of a weighted blanket. The apples cook down into the oats, making everything creamy and sweet without adding sugar. It's the kind of breakfast that makes getting out of bed slightly more bearable.

Ingredients (Serves 1):

  • 50g rolled oats
  • 250ml milk of choice (oat milk works beautifully)
  • 1 small apple, grated (no need to peel)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp maple syrup (optional)
  • A handful of walnuts or pecans to top

Method:

  1. Put the oats, milk, grated apple, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Reduce heat to low and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring frequently, until creamy and the oats are tender.
  4. If it gets too thick, add a splash more milk.
  5. Pour into a bowl, drizzle with maple syrup if using, and top with nuts.

Why it's gut-friendly: Oats are packed with beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that feeds good gut bacteria and helps regulate digestion. Apples contain pectin, another prebiotic fibre. Cinnamon helps stabilise blood sugar, preventing the mid-morning crash that can trigger anxiety.
